Active powerIn the Game of Thrones series, our perception of women is constantly changing. At first we learn that women are, on the whole, more the property of men and certainly posses less power than their male counter-parts. But as the series develop our understanding of (the main) women characters change and we see them all develop their own kind of power - either passively or actively.
'Active Power' come from the idea that the women go out and earn their power themselves, instead of manipulating people around them. Referenecs: Arya- 1. Season 6, episode 8 - 'No one' -Arya kills the assassin who's been sent to kill her (The Waif). -Defies the Many Faced God again and leaves. 2. Season 3, episode 10 - 'Mhysa' - Arya brutally kills the soldier who killed her brother at 'The Red Wedding' as the hound kills the other men. 3. Season 6, episode 10 - ' The Winds of Winter' - Arya kills Walder Fray for betraying her family in season 3 at 'The Red Wedding' after feeding him part of his sons. Brienne- 3. Season 4, episode 10 - 'The Children' - Brienne fights the hound, and wins. 4. Season 6, episode 1 - 'The Red Woman' - Brienne kills numerous Bolton men to save Sansa and Theon. Lyanna Mormont 5. Season 6, episode 10 - 'The Winds of Winter' - she puts all the other "noble" men in their place before declaring Jon the King in the North herself. Although Lady Mormont doesn't go out and kill her enemies herself - she is always very dominating and authoritative in her scenes which means she has her own kind of active power as she still stands up for what she believes - which differs from the passive power because otherwise she'd be less direct in her actions. |
